  1. The old cliche is that you’re either selling wins, or you’re selling hope. What is Minnesota selling?

  2. People weren’t paying for hope, and there weren’t any wins to be had. Not much else to do there…

… except NOT sign Darko, grossly overpay for Pekovic, dump Jefferson for 10 cents on the dollar, pick a 23-year old wing who has no chance at becoming an all-star when a 19-year-old stud big man is available, fire the best coach you had and bring in somebody with an offense that requires great wings and good-shooting point guards and subsequently trade your only good point guard and release the only above average shooting guard on the roster.

  3. Some other teams that should be honest in 2011:

    Cleveland
(Gilbert should admit he was drunk when he promised to win a title before LeBron)

Denver (they should admit they have no idea what to do w/ Melo and their title hopes are gone, regardless)

Detroit (not sure it would help, only die-hards & Joe Dumars think they have a shot at the playoffs)

    Golden St
(Don Nelson should admit he hasn’t cared about a game since they upset the Mavs in 2007)

Indiana (Larry Bird should admit he has no idea how to build a title contender for any season, let alone 2011)

LA Clippers (they should admit that either a curse exists or Sterling is the basketball anti-christ)

New Jersey (Prokhorov should admit he either has no idea how they’ll win a title in the next 5 yrs or that Avery Johnson & Billy King won’t be there when they do)

New Orleans (they should just buy freechrispaul.com already)

New York (admit they’re going to stink for the next 5 yrs & stop using free agents as carrots for the fans)

Philadelphia (admit Stefanski should be fired and then do it)

Portland (admit it will never work w/ the injury-prone players they’ve chosen to build around)

Toronto (admit Bryan Colangelo sabotaged the franchise to save his job)

Washington (admit Arenas & John Wall can’t co-exist in the same locker room, let alone backcourt)

  5. reservoirgod,

You could add just add Houston to your entry for Portland. Nearly broke my computer when I read that the Rockets were holding Yao to a hard cap of 24 minutes per game, and no playing on the 2nd night for back to backs. Not an average of 24 min/game, a hard cap each game. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/7202701.html All for the low, low price of $17.5 million. And fans are evidently supposed to be fine with this. Wonder if the Warriors will have a higher win total this year than the Rockets?

On the plus side, they’ve made a 2/4M offer to Erick Dampier and his .162 WP48. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/7202878.html Of course, he’s going to end up going to Miami like everyone else.

    I’ve been a Morey-hater for awhile now (see http://dberri.wordpress.com/2010/05/26/the-potential-contenders-in-2009-10/#comment-71725 and http://dberri.wordpress.com/2010/07/18/the-winners-and-losers-thus-far-in-the-nbas-free-agent-market/#comment-74184).

I didn’t include them in the list because I don’t think Morey actually believed (or promoted) this year’s team as a title contender. But yeah, they’ve been in the same boat as Portland for years. It’s funny that the only way Houston ever made it out of the 1st round was by beating Portland.
