Playing Poorly for the Long Haul
Last season Andrea Bargnani played terribly. It was the 10th worst performance of the turnover era (1978-present). The 9th spot on the list also goes to Bargnani for his 2008 performance. One or two bad seasons is nothing special. What is truly difficult is to make a career of it. Let’s just take a brief glimpse at some of Bargnani’s career accomplishments.
- 11095 Minutes Played -0.077 WP48 -17.8 Wins Produced
- 15.1 Points per Game with a 0.539 TS%
- 4.9 Rebounds per Game
It turns out Bargnani’s ability to play poorly and stay in the league is rare. That brings me to today’s trivia question.
Since 1978 only 8 players have managed to “earn” -15.0 Wins Produced or fewer and play 10,000 minutes or more. Can you name them?
As always I’ve started you off with one. Looking forward to your replies.

Congrats to Alex, Ben, Charles, James and Jason for solving this one super fast. Highlight the answers below if you want.
- Clifford Robinson -34.4 Wins Produced in 42558 minutes played
- Jeff Turner -26.7 Wins Produced in 11244 minutes played
- James Edwards -25 Wins Produced in 28356 minutes played
- Maurice Taylor -22.6 Wins Produced in 13323 minutes played
- Kevin Duckworth -21.8 Wins Produced in 17462 minutes played
- Jason Collins -18.5 Wins Produced in 14108 minutes played
- Andrea Bargnani -17.8 Wins Produced in 11095 minutes played
- Antoine Carr -15.9 Wins Produced in 19780 minutes played

No way I can name them all, but for some reason, Cliff Robinson is coming to mind…
Not very confident in that one, though.
Ben,
Excellent start and way to nail #1 on the list! With over 40,000 minutes he’s the gold standard for being bad for a long time. Of course his trick was to play a few good seasons early in his career and then terrible for the rest of it.
Glen Robinson?
Reggie Theus?
Anthony,
Glenn Robison was terrible but actually had a positive WP48 (0.001). Reggie Thesus was below average but still productive. The players I found put them to shame in terms of bad play. Keep looking.
Bryant Reeves?
Adam Morrison?
Rashard Lewis?
Evan,
Good guesses. Reeves fits the minutes but just wasn’t bad enough (“only” -1.5 wins) Adam Morrison needed more time, -8 Wins in only 3K minutes of play. Rashard was surprisingly productive when he was younger before becoming the money pit he is today. Keep those guesses coming!
Stephon Marbury
Steve Francis
Eddy Curry?
I’m so excited that a Washington Husky is on this list that I have to give this one away. James Edwards.
I’ll guess both of the Collins brothers. Jason is more likely than Jarron, I think.
Bob McAdoo?
James Edwards?
Charles and James,
Yup James Edwards is #3
Jason,
Right on with Jason Collins (#6 on the list). Jarron was pretty bad too but missed the minutes count.
Anthony,
Eddy Curry was bad but only around -3 wins bad. Marbury and Francis were both decent-good earlier in their career, so even their dive bombs don’t get them close.
Excellent guesses all, we’re halfway there!
Charles,
Bob McAdoo was actually quite productive and even when he fell off it wasn’t as bad as some of these players.
Chris Dudley or Billy Paultz!
Jeff Green or Darko Milicic?
Art Harris?
Antoine Walker? Walter McCarty? Bruce Bowen? Luc Longley?

Interesting article on Bargnani’s defensive skills.
Seems he rates ok on-the-ball…he’s just seemingly terrible off-the-ball and rebounding.
As for the guesses:
Danny Ferry
Walter McCarty
Sean Rooks
Mikki Moore
Brad Lohaus
Jarred Jeffries
Antonie Carr, Kevin Duckworth, Maurice Taylor, Jeff Turner… I bet Pat Garrity is pretty close.
Nickolas and Jason,
Good guesses. McCarty, Moore, Lohaus and Longley are on my bad player list but nowhere near top 10.
Oblivious Pocket and Todd,
Sorry no on Harris, Dudley and Paultz
Charles,
Nice guesses. Jeff has hit the minute mark but needs to play much worse to climb the list. Darko is great guess but thankfully he hasn’t hit 10,000 minutes yet. Give him a season though.
Alex,
Dang I thought you were busy! Carr, Duckworth, Taylor and Turner are right! That wraps it up all. Thanks for the awesome guesses.
Ron Mercer, WInston Garland, Vernon Maxwell, and Desmond Mason?
