Could Carmelo Anthony win MVP?

I love answering question on Quora. I was out of town when Jonathan Brill asked me a question about who would be MVP next season. Luckily, Nick Pritzakis was on the ball with a brilliant answer. Enjoy!

Given the acquisitions of Camby and Kidd, along with Chandler and Felton, the Knicks will be a very good team in the 2012-2013 season. Obviously Carmelo will get all the credit. Bolder Prediction: Hollinger’s PER numbers will magically reveal a huge jump in Carmelo’s game (has he ever disclosed the algorithm for that by the way?), and ESPN will hop on the ill-constructed bandwagon. Then,
(1) Knicks-Heat will meet in the playoffs.
(2) Knicks will lose, though no quite as thoroughly as they did this year.
(3) Knicks fans blame the refs.
(4) MVP Melo fails to move out of the first/second round yet again.

Any thoughts, guys?

As ridiculous as it would be, I can see it happening – the Knicks play the right players and win 55+ by beating up the soft East, the media falls in love, and ‘Melo, by virtue of scoring the most points for his team, is instantly in MVP discussions.

Durant is likely the favorite going into this year, though – the Thunder are still stacked, he’s the best scorer in the league, and media voters seem to hate giving the award to the same guy year after year, no matter how good he is. Not that I’d count LeBron out, but merely being the best player in the league won’t win a MVP award through all the politics and prejudices.

as a numbers geek i cant say id ever vote for a guy who shoots low 40% as an MVP. i can say even less id vote for a FORWARD who shoots this low.
to me if you are going to lable yourself as a “SUPERSTAR” you have to be able to do more than one thing. lebron , jordan, durant, bird, Ewing, all shot over 50% and did SOMETHING else other than take jumpers. so the bail out i usually get is “hes a PURE SCORER”

ok ill examine this one as well, to be a PURE scorer you should be efficent at it correct? shooting 40% from the floor for the first 4 months is not scoring thats shooting. in most games if your TEAM shoots 50% you will win. more realistically 47%
so if you are a SUPERSTAR who ONLY SCORES… then i need for you to shoot OVER 50% this way my role players can shoot 44% and we still win.

so no, melo is not an MVP.

This question begs a much bigger one. If Melo wins the MVP, many of us will instantly ask if it is the worst choice in history; we could avoid a great deal of scrambling in June by determining the worst selection so far. I vote Iverson in ’01; a WP48 of .077. That’s not just below average; of players with at least 600 minutes, it’s the lowest on his own team.

Bob McAdoo in ’75, Willis Reed in ’70, Wes Unseld in ’69, and Bob Cousy in ’57 may have all been bad choices, but each player is someone who should have been in the conversation. (Maybe not Cousy–hard to see a 38% shooter as efficient enough. Russell missed a chunk of the season for the Olympics, but without looking at a single number, I’ll say Pettit and half a dozen other guys had to be better.) You might argue that in some of these cases a guy or three got robbed; when AI won, there were literally DOZENS of more valuable players, and that’s the magnitude of travesty we might be facing if Carmelo steals a trophy.

ya iverson was my next pick. but the reason iverson won was more of what you SAW on espn. in those days you had less national broadcast and all you saw on espn was this small feisty guard coming down the lane with a crazy cross over and scoring on a fantastic play. by the time we had all fallen in love with his david vs goliath and flash&style it was the finals and we are watching this guy shoot 39% from the floor and score 30ppg and say.. hey wait something aint right here! you didnt see all the fall away jumpers on espn highlights
