The discussion of opportunity cost of players is strange to me. Why is this in relation to the average player? The average player is unavailable to a team because they are typically employed. So why is the claim that the opportunity cost is the average player? Opportunity cost is typically measured as the next best alternative, which would imply a replacement level player a-la the sabermetric community. Average is not replacement level. I might be a little off-content with this comment, but this is something that confused me when I watched the videocast.

There are average quality players sitting on the bench, and playing in other leagues.

I thought it would be fair to measure total greatness as the player’s ability less the ability of an average player. If you put in the player’s actual backup, you would be closer to his true value to the team, but further away from his true value independent of the team.
