Which Teams Have the Best Backcourts?

Fun question I was asked to answer on Quora! Jeremy Lin and Harden aren’t a hard answer, but a few of the other tandems may surprise you.

George Hill might be performing at a couple notches above Meh so far this season, but the Pacers acquired him in exchange for Kawhi Leonard after they drafted him.

Pro Tip: if the Spurs call wanting to trade for one of your draft picks, consider yourself lucky for having stumbled upon a top prospect so late in the draft and put down the phone immediately!.

JGlanton does make a good point. CP3 outperforms Tony and Manu’s combined production by himself, and is basically their match on a per minute basis:
Tony+Manu=0.388 WP48
CP3=0.369 WP48
Also, Crawford is below average, but above zero, and has produced over a win himself this season. So really, CP3+Crawford is probably the best, if most lopsided backcourt in the league up to this point in the season.

Re: your mention of Ginobili appearing to spend considerable time at SF, I think this is an artifact of the position-allocation algorithm. Ginobili does spend considerable time on the court this season as the 3rd-tallest player the Spurs have on the court, especially while Leonard was not active. However, if you watch what Ginobili is actually doing when on the floor in lineups like Splitter-Diaw-Ginobili-Neal-DeColo or Diaw-Jackson-Ginobili-Green-Mills, he is not playing SF. In fact, when playing with Neal (who did play a lot of PG last season, but is more effective at SG) and Green (who often starts as SG when Leonard is not injured), Ginobili is functionally the PG, initiating the offense, and sometimes even bringing the ball downcourt. Last night, against Houston, Ginobili even operated in the PG role on several possessions when sharing the court with DeColo. When the Spurs go small, as they did frequently during the 15 games when both Leonard and Jackson were injured), and Ginobili is in with Green and either Parker or Mills, it is Green who serves as SF, with Ginobili as SG. I don’t know how you could automate the position classification in a situation like this, but the roles are very obvious when watching all of those games (as I do as a Spurs season ticket holder).
