Over at Deadspin, Reuben Fischer-Baum has compiled a list of the highest-paid public employees by state and occupation. He turned it into an infographic by combining that information with a map of the US. As he says in the article:
You may have heard that the highest-paid employee in each state is usually the football coach at the largest state school. This is actually a gross mischaracterization: sometimes it is the basketball coach.
Oh Reuben, you kidder, you! As he states in the article, the list includes 27 football coaches, 13 basketball coaches, one hockey coach, and 10 non-sports related employees. Yes, that number is 51 (instead of 50) because there is one tie, not because the US has annexed Canada.
We’ve actually written on this subject a lot at Wages of Wins. In March, Dave Berri wrote a post about why NCAA “student athletes” should be paid, and compared the salaries of NCAA basketball coaches to NBA head coaches. And if you type “NCAA” into the search box in the upper-right, you’ll find 16 pages of articles, many of which are related to coach compensation.
