There will be wrestling in Tokyo in 2020

As previously anticipated in this forum, wrestling made it into the 2020 Olympic games, beating baseball/softball and squash rather handily. The final voting results were:

  • Wrestling: 49
  • Baseball/softball: 24
  • Squash: 22

This reverses the IOC’s decision to remove wrestling in the first place. And it only took seven months to come to their senses!

In other Olympic news, Tokyo “won” the right to host the Olympics in 2020. As noted here by Andrew Zimbalist, there is little evidence that Tokyo will see an economic benefit from hosting the Olympics. In the interim, the 2016 Summer Olympics will be in Rio de Janeiro, and most of us are now aware that the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi (a mere six months away).

For the record, the other two cities under consideration were Istanbul and Madrid. The final voting results were:

Round 1

  • Tokyo: 42
  • Istanbul: 26
  • Madrid: 26

Round 1 tie-break

  • Istanbul: 49
  • Madrid: 45

Round 2

  • Tokyo: 60
  • Istanbul: 36
